Merit Certificate Winners

Congratulations to Asha, Olivia and Osman who were last week's Merit Certificate winners. Ms Peake and I are very proud of how hard you are working. It is fantastic to see the whole class continuously striving to reach their goals. Well done!

Student of the Week

You may have heard your child mention 'Student of the Week' or our famous 'Peg Chart' for behaviour. Each week, our students try their best to present amazing behaviour throughout the day. When this fantastic behaviour is noticed their name will be moved up on the Peg Chart. Once they reach the top, 'Awesome', they are put into a draw on Friday afternoons. Whoever is drawn out is then our 'Student of the Week' for the following week. This student has privileges such as, having a special pillow for their chair, collecting a prize, helping the teacher with special duties and sitting on a chair during mat sessions. Students are constantly encouraged to present excellent behaviour throughout the week in order to reach this. Please continue to encourage your child at home to be presenting their very best behaviour in class at all times. We would love to have all students having a turn at being 'Student of the Week' this year!

Our Terrific Twos

What's happening in Term 2...

The students of Room 14 have been straight back into action after a lovely two week break! This term, I will be teaching from Tuesday through to Friday, while Ms Peake is keeping very busy with important Admin duties! Ms Peake will continue to teach in our classroom on Monday for the rest of Term 2. Last term, Ms Peake and I sent home Test Books for parents to share with your child. Thank you to all parents for writing a comment to their child and returning the books so promptly. It is fantastic to work in partnership with you in your children's learning, your involvement truly makes a difference to their learning!

Mother's Day

We hope all the Mums from Room 14 had a fantastic Mother's Day! The class had a great day of creating their specials gifts to take home. We had a photo booth set up in the classroom, where everyone was able to say why they loved their mum. We hope these photos made you smile!

Science Superstars!

In an endeavour to lift the profile of Science across the school and get students enthused about all things 'sciency', we have a whole school fun competition in mind. Participation and enthusiasm is our key objective here.

This competition has 3 stages:

Stage 1: Each student will research and present either a short science experiment or report on a science related concept, to our class. The students in our class will then select their top two 'super scientists'.

Stage 2: The selected two students will then have to present (again) to ALL the students and teachers in Year 2. An admin representative will will then choose their year group's #1 scientist!

Stage 3: Finally, we celebrate our top 6 scientists by getting them to present their report or experiment to the entire school, at a giant Science assembly! There will be prizes awarded to all students who made it through each stage of the process.

The Presentation:
  • Can be a report or an experiment
  • Can be a maximum of 5 minutes in length
  • Students can use ICT resources such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word (or similar) to support their presentation
  • Posters and charts are also an option to assist their presentations
  • Experiments should be simple to set up, demonstrate the outcome within the time limit, and be safe!
There are many websites that can help assist in finding ideas on what to present. These have been listed on the letter sent out to parents and students last week.

Due Date:  All experiments/reports will be presented in Week 6 on your child's regular news day.

If you have any further questions please feel free to come and see myself or Ms Peake during the week.

Principal's Volunteer Reading Program

The Principal's Volunteer Reading Program will be taking place again this year, after having such a great success last year. The reading program is so successful, as it provides all students with greater opportunities to read.

A huge thank you to parents who have signed up to volunteer their time to assist our student's reading! If you are able to volunteer, please do come and see us in class and we can arrange to fit you into the timetable- the more volunteers that we have the more opportunities students will have to read.

We thank you and appreciate you offering your time to help our students!

All About Maths!

All About Maths!

Here are some photos of students in Room 14 creating whole shapes using parts of other shapes. We learnt that two even halves make one whole. Then we cut the halves into half again to create one quarter. We joined the quarters together again, to create one whole.

The students thoroughly enjoyed this hands-on maths activity, which taught them about shapes and how shapes can be shared into equal parts.

Procedure Writing!

Last week, Room 14 focused on writing procedures. We practised writing each part of  a procedure for 'How to Make Fairy Bread'. This was very exciting for the class, because there was a special surprise for them if they were to complete their very best writing. Yes, we got to make our very own Fairy Bread! We had to make sure we had the right materials and ingredients that we had listed in our procedure.

Once our writing was complete, we followed our procedures and ensured we took the correct steps to make the delicious treat. Ask your child to show you how well they can follow procedures!

First, we had to spread the butter evenly over our slice of bread.

Next, we had to carefully sprinkle on the 100's and 1000's over the butter.

Sprinkle, sprinkle...

...and more sprinkling!

Then finally...

We could taste it!

Literacy & Maths Blocks

In Room 14 we have all been enjoying taking part in our Literacy and Maths rotations each day. Our lessons include an engaging warm up, followed by explicit instruction to ensure each student understands the concept being taught. Following this, the class takes part in a 'We Do', where we are able to practise the new concept.

Our class participating in the 'We Do' strategy. Here we are learning about contractions. The class love this learning where hands-on activities are involved.
Once the students understand the concept, rotations  then take place. This is where everyone is able to practise what they have learned within their learning groups.
